I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned her before, but my friend (we’ll call her Cari) has a special… gift? experience? at Mass. It started a few months ago and got stronger after the Rite of Election: She sees something happen to the host at the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
I really want to get her to guest post about it rather than trying to explain it myself, but today I asked her what she saw and she said it was different — rather than a swirl of color like she usually sees coming down, it was more of a sparkle like rain. She wondered why I asked, and I said that I wondered if she saw anything different that could account for everyone forgetting to kneel.
“I don’t know about you,” she replied, “but I was watching the bird.”
Over a year ago Cari was at Mass, got distracted during the homily, and she sees this bird swooping back and forth between the lights in the church, by the windows, over the sanctuary… and spends the whole homily watching the bird fly around. I thought she was talking about a mockingbird that had somehow gotten inside and made a nest in the rafters. A few weeks later I was at Mass and out of the corner of my eye, this bird zooms past the stained glass window. As soon as I looked over, it was gone. It was more like the shadow or outline of a bird, because if it was a real bird, everyone else would have seen it, and it would have made noise as it flew around. I should probably add that we both frequently see doves (!) flying out of some of the trees by the church…
So, maybe it had something to do with the bird. I think God’s up to something. I wonder what it could be.
